Upright Duister

Duister was brewed in collaboration with our friends from Oproar Brewery of the Netherlands. The duo there, Bart-Jan and Mark, both like strong, dark beers, and have an affinity for oats, so we set out to produce an Imperial Porter in that vein. While a strong oat Porter may not sound that unusual these days, the Duister does have some interesting processing elements – specifically employing open fermentation with a standard American ale yeast, and being bottle conditioned, something very few brewers attempt with beers outside of Farmhouse styles anymore. This beer was partially aged in Rye Whiskey casks, evident in the nose with light char and spirit aromas, while the flavor combines classic Porter malt character with a touch of vanilla and more spirit notes. The Duister will certainly age well, but it’s best enjoyed within a year.
